In 1704, the Irish-born deist and rationalist John Toland wrote:

Natural religion was easy first and plain,
Tales made it Mystery, Offerings made it Gain,
Sacrifices and Shows were then prepar’d
The Priest ate Roast-meat and the People starv’d.

Dr Manning will be looking at how subsequent thinkers challenged and developed this analysis   He will conlude with a brief discussion on the prospect of ‘theology without religion’

Russell Re Manning is a philosopher of religion with wide-ranging research and teaching interests in modern and contemporary philosophy and theology.

Dr Re Manning's research engages four related areas: the intellectual history of natural theology; theologies of culture; philosophy of religion; and topics in science and religion.
